Shorts - 4 - Dream big - Dr. Neil Hillman

When we’re faced with a difficult choice, what are we most likely to do?

Steadfastly remain faithful to our original goal? Or settle for an easy way out, attempting to convince ourselves that we’ve tried our best, even if we know that deep-down, really, we’ve sold ourselves short.

When author Malcolm Gladwell refers to his ‘10,000-hour rule,’ he asserts that the key to achieving true expertise in any skill is a matter of practising for 10,000 hours.

Conversely, with his ‘100-hour rule’, Jesse Itzler maintains that practicing for 100 hours a year in a particular discipline (that’s just 18 minutes a day) is all it takes to be better than 95% of the world in that discipline.

These are two very different propositions – the first is committed to the pursuit of excellence. The second, frankly, is a cop-out; because 95% of the world are not highly-skilled in anything that they do.

So it’s a choice for you to make; although to consistently make the right choice on your own can be tough.

Who is there to hold you accountable for your personal and professional dreams and goals?

Well, I’m a coach. I’m there.
