Shorts - 9 - Alf - Dr. Neil Hillman

In my opinion, there’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to coaching strategy, or how you determine the best approach in helping individuals to become the best that they can be. Every one of us is slightly different, and a good coach will take time to learn and understand the strengths and weaknesses of their client.

Two hugely successful soccer coaches – Brian Clough and Sir Alf Ramsey – took very different approaches in guiding their players to victory.

Once, during a match where one of his players was receiving treatment on the pitch after being knocked-out, Brian was told “Boss, he’s had a knock on the head and he doesn’t know who he is, or where he is.”
“Well tell him he’s Pelé and it’s the World Cup Final” came the reply.

Some say that controversial ‘Cloughie’ was the greatest manager that England never had.

Conversely, Sir Alf Ramsey was an England manager. He was knighted after guiding his side to winning the World Cup, in 1966; the only time England have won the most prestigious tournament in the professional game.

When one of his players – Jackie Charlton – voiced his pride that he’d been selected to play in the national side, obviously because Alf considered him to be the best centre-half in England, Ramsey gently replied “Of course there are better centre-halves than you, Jack, but you possess the qualities I need in the system I wish to employ.”

Honesty doesn’t have to be painful, but it does build trust; and trust drives progress.
