As a child I would avidly watch Raymond Baxter and James Burke on ‘Tomorrow’s World’. As a documentary sound recordist working for the ‘Science and Features’ department of the BBC some 25 years later, it thrilled me to work on the programme, travelling extensively throughout Japan and the US, as well as a ‘TW special’ I remember we made from Israel; which I was surprised to learn had a great number of technology companies. Now we know. But we didn’t then.
The ‘firsts’ we showed were exciting: SatNav, phone watches, video calling… Other technological endeavours were destined to become epic ‘fails’: the stories about farming fish in space and lab-growing a Woolly Mammoth from frozen DNA come to mind.
Experience. I think it’s pretty important to have done the job, and to have done it well, if you’re coaching others.
